Royalties - Getting Your Fair Share  (Continued from page 2)

When choosing help in this area, there are two questions you may ask yourself before making a decision. First, is it worth the added cost of hiring a firm to protect your interests? The answer to this question is a resounding yes! The loss of royalty payments, even over a few months, could result in a loss of substantially more than it would cost to hire a firm to protect these interests. Some companies feel that as long as they hire a lawyer to protect their legal interests, this is sufficient to protect and assure they are receiving their fair share of royalties. In essence, an attorney will be sure that the terminology being used is correct, and that there are no issues which may be ambiguous. But can they control the fair reporting of royalty payments, even if it is based upon a sound legal contract? The answer is no. That is why it is worth every penny to hire a firm that will follow through and be sure you are not being cheated when it comes to royalty payments.

Another element to consider in this choice is the size and location of the firm you hire. Remember, you are dealing with the World Wide Web now, so a company that is hired should have the ability to protect your interests world-wide. Global companies with offices and staff throughout the world, can ensure that not only your national, but also your international rights are being monitored.

In a perfect world, such careful scrutiny would not be necessary. But as we all know, nothing is perfect. As for Morris Levy, well he did end up in jail for extortion. However, upon his death at age 89, he left an estate valued at over 70 million dollars. The question is, how much money belonged to the royalty owners who never received their fair share?
