Kessler’s Corner

How much information is too much when your company’s reputation and financial stability are at stake? In today’s competitive environment, savvy executives know there is no such thing as too much knowledge. It’s always the one piece of information you DON’T have that comes back to haunt you. In the business world, a critical piece of information can ultimately spell the difference between success and failure.

When you think about it, few items are more critical than knowing the backgrounds of your employees and vendors. After all, these are the people with whom you entrust a good portion of your business. How much do you really know about these people?

In an ideal world, you wouldn’t have to conduct background checks. Unfortunately, people often fudge facts on a resume or create a fictional past so they will seem more qualified. The cases of resume fraud that have recently made headlines only serve to underscore the need for companies to do more. Only by checking an applicant’s background can you be sure the person you’re hiring is the person he or she says.

The time to conduct a background check is before you hire an individual or enter into a business relationship with a vendor. Discovering a misrepresentation after the person is already working for you may be too late.

However, not every company has the resources to carry out a proper background search on their own. The time and cost involved can be significant, and the results may be less than thorough. But not doing a search at all could ultimately prove even more costly. Fortunately, you have an alternative.

Kessler & Associates is a leader in corporate intelligence, with a global network of staff and investigative affiliates to help you gather information you need about job applicants, employees or potential vendors quickly and efficiently. We have years of experience in conducting investigations of all types, and our contacts in law enforcement allow us to obtain more accurate and reliable information than you could acquire on your own. Our proprietary FERRETSM software can search dozens of national

and international databases, some only accessible by law enforcement officials, as well as hundreds of thousands of our own private files, in a matter of minutes. For more information, please call our office at (800) 932-2221 or .

Whether or not you choose to use our services, we hope the information in this newsletter convinces you of the need to establish the proper background check procedures to protect the future of your business. The cost of not knowing may be too high.

Sincerely.

Michael G. Kessler

Tech Talk with INFOTEX

Infotex has made its mark as the most up-to-date online database for the licensing industry available today. Infotex can provide the information you require in a matter of moments, and with the accuracy imperative in a licensing information database.

Infotex databases are updated daily to assure accuracy and thoroughness. A research staff is on hand, not only to update the data, but also to be available to subscribers via phone if they are unable to locate any required information. Infotex tracks brands, people, characters and everything in between. At present this includes approximately 150,000 items of licensable intellectual property, 5,000 licensers, and about 15,000 licensees.

To guarantee the search results you require, Infotex has developed a 10-option search menu that allows the user to ask the questions they want and obtain the answers they need. The searches were designed for all ends of the licensing line from the licensor to the retailer, so there are appropriate ways for each group to get the proper information.

Infotex’ current client base is varied and includes The Learning Company, Beverly Hills Polo Club, Hearst Entertainment, Roger Richman Agency, Garner Nevins, IMG and many others.

Infotex offers several subscription plans. Visit them at their website www.infotex.net for more information and to apply for membership.
