FEDERAL INQUIRY INTO UTILITIES PROJECT CONTINUES
The Department of Justice investigation into Cape Coral's utilities expansion program is still in progress, according to a letter the city received this week.
Justice Department attorney James L. Weis wrote that Cape Coral won't be told when the investigation concludes.
City Manager Terry Stewart, working on instructions from the City Council, wrote to the department on Jan. 5 asking how the city would know when it ends.
"The longer this matter remains unresolved, the more uncertainty and mistrust develops among the citizens of Cape Coral," Stewart wrote.
Weis replied:
"I am sure you understand that we have a lot of information to review, and we will make our best efforts to do so as quickly as possible. It is not our policy to issue any sort of 'letter of exoneration' when our investigation is concluded."
The justice department started its investigation after Mike Kessler, who prepared a report on the project for the city, notified DOJ of possible contract problems.
Councilman Tim Day said he wasn't surprised. "It ain't over. It lets me know as a councilman that there is something that makes them unable to conclude the investigation."
