Information Theft Soars
A report just out says that, while many firms are watching their systems for hackers over the Y2K period, they may have shut the door after the horse has bolted. The report, from Kessler & Associates, the investigative consulting company, says that proprietary information theft by hackers and unauthorized people, has jumped by more than 100 percent over the last three years.
"Computer crime is much more complex than bugs and viruses," Michael Kessler, Kessler & Associates' president says, warning against complacency once the Y2K date change period is over as, based on recent cases handled by his firm's corporate cybercrime detection and computer forensics divisions, hacker problems can occur any time.
According to Kessler's research, disgruntled employees now account for 35 percent of corporate computer intrusions. Independent hackers follow (28 percent) and other attacks come from US corporations (18 percent), foreign corporations (11 percent) and foreign governments (eight percent).
